# Formatting Text
Character vs. paragraph styles on any webpage:**Paragraph** Styles & **Text** Styles
## Character Styles
Markdown is a 'semantic editor.' What that means is thatformatting is triggered by special characters like ``* **> # ## ###``.
One `*` on each side of a word makes it italics.
Two `**` on each side make a word bold.
Three `***` on each side add bold+italics.
Let's try it!
*This is italics.* easy right?
**This is bold.** no problem!
***This is bold + italics.*** I got it!
## Paragraph Styles
Markdown is a 'semantic editor.' What that means is thatformatting is triggered by special characters like ``* **> # ## ###``.
The main paragraph styles are Headings 1-5, paragraphs,block quotes, and plain text (aka code).
To create a Heading 1, insert one `#`. To insert a heading2, use two `##`, for heading 3 use `###` and so on.
Give it a try yourself.
# This is a heading one
This is just some text.
Highlighted text
~~strikethrough~~
or
strikethrtough
Your turn:
Try a heading 2, 3, and 4:
## This is a heading two
This is what is known as paragraph text.
### This is heading three
More paragraph text
> This is a Blockquote
and this... is called pretext:
This is pretext! It ignores all html and **markdown**!
When we set up your site, we standardize the font and sizeof each heading to maintain consistency on your site.
This is code It **ignores** all html andmarkdown!
## Lists
This is a bulleted list:
* item 1
* item 2
* item 3
This is a numbered list:
1. item 1
2. item 2
3. Item 3
You can also combine them:
1. Item 1
* item a
* item b
2. Item 2
* item c
* item d
With a little CSS, we can create custom bullets for you too.
